My Road to becoming an LDA

I remember many years back, I was 21 years old with a 6 month old son. Motherhood suited me, but I remember thinking that it was going to be difficult to pursue my career goals. I heard about a friend of mine becoming a paralegal and my first thought was "I could never be a paralegal, I'm definitely not smart enough for that." It's true, my self esteem was not in the best place, not because of becoming a young mom, more from my partner of choice at the time.

I started working for an Engineering/Land Surveying firm when my son was a year old, and gained valuable working experience, and solid confidence in my professional abilities. Suddenly, I knew that whatever I put my mind to, I could do, and I also realized that I was smart!

I started back to college, scheduling classes around work and taking care of a young son on my own. When my son turned 2, I was served with legal papers that were suing me for full custody of my son. I was shocked and felt betrayed, while there was no good legal reason for him seeking custody, he was undermining the fact that I was a single mother.

I sought a consultation with an attorney from a law firm and they guided me on how the court would receive the motion from my ex, and what I needed to do to respond. I completed all documents on my own, and even got a kudos from my ex's attorney on my paperwork and brief. Needless to say the judge denied his motion for full custody and in the process he even had to pay additional child support since he was making much more money.

This experience was my first introduction into the legal field and I loved it. I decided to pursue my legal education, obtaining my Bachelors in Legal Studies and my Paralegal Certificate. I went on to work for a law firm and advanced into managing staff and assisting attorneys with their cases. I have contemplated law school at several different forks in the road, and decided that an LDA business was my next venture and I have felt fulfilled every minute. I am passionate about helping others help themselves, challenging myself every day and meeting wonderful people.

During my days at the Engineering/Land Surveying firm, I was lucky enough to meet the love of my life, my husband, who ended up adopting my son, who is now 19 years old and discovering his own career path.

It took some time to finally open my own business, but I believe all roads that I have traveled have led me to this point in my life. My previous work experience prepared me for where I am now, and I would not change anything at all.
